My name is Emel -- pronounced "ML" -- and I'm a highly sensitive person who partners with highly sensitive HR managers to help them lead holistic and creative lives while staying ambitious, productive, and committed to what matters most at work. I am an IFS and Compassionate Inquiry informed coach.
You chose to become an HR manager because of your deep empathy for people and your desire to create a psychologically safe working environment. Early on, you thrived - your sensitivity as a highly sensitive person allowed you to connect with your colleagues, resolve conflicts with compassion, and create a sense of belonging in the workplace. As you climbed the corporate ladder, however, your responsibilities grew heavier.
Balancing the needs of your colleagues with the demands of the company became increasingly complex. You were caught between decisions that aligned with your values and the hard realities of corporate goals. This constant tension weighed on you emotionally.
The dilemmas became more frequent - navigating layoffs, mediating conflicts, managing office politics -- all while trying to maintain your own well-being. As a highly sensitive person, the weight of these decisions led to feeling drained, conflicted, and even frustrated. You love being committed to making a difference, but the emotional toll of all this feels too much for you.
You need to know that these struggles are not your fault. Your managers often demand tough decisions and constant reprioritization that can be tough, especially for someone with a heightened sensitivity to the needs and emotions of others. Your struggles come from your job description, not a lack of skills or resilience on your part. Your natural ability to care deeply and empathize with your colleagues is a rare strength.
The journey of an HSP in HR is rewarding. Yet, it's very important to find ways to care for yourself while continuing to lead with strength and compassion. Below are a couple tips that will help you turn stressful situations into one that encourages self-compassion.
1. Acknowledge your feelings
2. Set boundaries
3. Practice self-compassion
4. Engage in mindful reflection
Which one of the four tips above is the most challenging for you? Let's talk!
Please remember: You deserve the same care and compassion you extend to others every day.
